Weight Loss in the “Real World” – Tip #5

Everyone loves popcorn. And really, what’s not to love? Crunchy, tasty, and the perfect weight loss food too! I recently read that the average person eats 30 cups of popcorn a year. Obviously I am not average, as I eat that much in a month…..or less. But eating popcorn is a good way to get rid of belly fat. Popcorn is a whole grain. We need to eat more whole grains. Whole grains are full of fiber. Fiber fills us up, and helps flush toxins out of our system. A new study shows that eating more grain based fiber may help us live longer by reducing our risk of death from heart disease, infectious diseases, and respiratory diseases. So eat popcorn. But….

You knew there would be some conditions, right? Getting the jumbo size, salted,  popcorn at the movies loaded with that stuff they call butter won’t help you lose weight. Or live longer. Better choices – make popcorn at home or at the office for a mid-afternoon snack. I like Orville Redenbacher Smart Pop 94% fat-free microwave popcorn singles, but at home I usually make my own using regular popcorn in a microwave popcorn popper (one of the best investments I ever made, for less than $20) and about 1/2 Tbsp of canola oil. I top it off with nutritional yeast flakes (for a cheesy but vegan flavor) or one of the many popcorn seasonings out there. My current favorite is Kernel Season’s White Cheddar Popcorn Seasoning. It gives a good cheese flavor, but is fine enough that you don’t have to add very much. Just make sure that whatever seasoning you choose, it doesn’t have any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat.

So there you go. Eat popcorn to lose weight and live longer!
